Are you familiar with Ayurveda?

It may be all in my head, but after I came across this word it seems I keep hearing it over and over again. If it is not someone on TV who talks about it, I may hear it on the radio, and even on social media posts.

But what is Ayurveda? The big picture is that it is a 3000-year-old Hindu medicinal method can help you achieve the wellness you want.

It is an honor system from India that means “science of life”. Well, my geek side is so excited to read this.

Humans have always been driven by curiosity, and this is how we are able to create and innovate. But all this creation and innovation has made us forget some of the most basic things we need in life.

Food, for example, has become a huge business. The market is trying to not only satisfied the demand but also make a profit out of it. Hmmm, interesting stuff.

We are surrounded by ads, marketing, and messages surrounding food, but somehow we have become disconnected to it.

Let’s be real, how many times have you been sitting in front of the TV or computer mindlessly munching on something. I do it more often than I would like to admit!

Ask yourself: When was the last time you sat down to have a meal and actually became aware of the personal experience you were going through at that specific moment in time?

You are nurturing your body, your organs, your brain by feeding it the nutrients it needs. If we don’t make it a personal experience, we don’t realize what nutrients we are adding and end up with foods that are lacking in certain nutrients, etc.

If you start to follow an ayurvedic method for your food then you become more aware of what you are eating. How? Ayurveda considers a balanced meal one that includes the following tastes:

Sweet

Sour

Salty

Bitter

Astringent

Pungent

Ok, I pretty much taste just sweet and salt, I guess my brain has become pretty primitive. Although I am familiar with sweet and sour flavors too (Hello Chinese Food!).

Back to the serious part. If you make sure every meal you eat includes all these flavors, then you are getting a balanced diet according to the Ayurvedic method.

As you can imagine, 3000 years ago people didn’t have access to the modern medicine and technology we do today. People lived for shorter periods of times, but those who were able to live longer used nature as medicine.

How many of you remember your grandmother handing you a cup of teas with mixed herbs to help cure that cold? She may have been onto something!

I am not a full practitioner of Ayurveda, but since learning about it I have tried to become more aware of the foods I eat.

I try my best to stick to a whole foods plant-based diet, and you can certainly find all those flavors in different vegetables and fruits. Think of how different is the taste of a strawberry from an orange.

Ayurveda has helped me become more aware of my eating habits. It also helped me questioned what I am eating, and if I am nurturing my body with the right foods.
